Abstract

Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to monitor microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) characteristics on total phenolics content, electron donating ability and nitrite scavenging ability for the Angelica gigas Nakai, thereby optimizimg MAE conditions for each response variable. Experiments for 16 different MAE conditions based on a central composite design for ethanol concentration (%), microwave power (W) and extraction time (min) were conducted, and MAE conditions for the maximal responses were predicted : total phenolics content (796.91§·%, d.b.) at 93.92%, 110.55 W, and 3.85 min; electron donating ability (93.14%) at 69.02%, 72.52 W, and 8.68 mim; and nitrite scavenging ability (65.78%/? 1.2) at 76.71%, 105.07 W, and 1.86 min, respectively. These estimated values agreed reasonably well with those measured by real experiments.
